The current problem
The paper gradebook works. It just costs a lot of time.
Teachers across Belize keep careful, accurate records by hand. The difficulty is not the record-keeping — it is everything that has to be repeated around it, every term, for every student.
The same sums, every term
Averages are worked out by hand for every student, in every subject, three times a year — then checked a second time to be sure.
Corrections are awkward
A single amended mark means erasing, recalculating the row, and updating anywhere the old total was already written down.
Report cards take days
Marks are copied from the gradebook onto each card by hand, along with comments, attendance and conduct.
Paper records are fragile
A gradebook can be damaged, lost or left behind, and there is rarely a second copy of a full term of marks.
Formats drift between classes
Without a shared template, report cards from different teachers can look and read differently across the same school.
Patterns are hard to see
Spotting which students are slipping, or which assessment the whole class struggled with, means reading down columns by eye.

Six steps, from an empty class list to a printed report card.
The order matters — each step uses what the one before it produced.
Set up the class and subject
Choose the school year and term, pick the class, then select or create the subject you are marking.
Create and name assessments
Add assignments, quizzes, projects, tests and examinations, and give each one a name you will recognise later.
Enter and save student grades
Work down the class list entering marks. Each entry is saved as you go, and can be corrected later without redoing the row.
Calculate and review term averages
Averages update as marks are entered, using either a simple average or the weighting your school has configured.
Add comments, attendance and conduct
Record the written comment, attendance figures and conduct that belong on each student’s report card, alongside the grades they accompany.
Generate and print report cards
Send the term’s grades to the report card in your school’s format, then print a class set or export a PDF.
